Denilson Botelho holds a bachelor’s degree in History from the Fluminense Federal University (UFF) and a master’s and PhD in Social History from the State University of Campinas (Unicamp). He is a professor of Brazilian History at the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP) and is affiliated with the Graduate Program in History (PPGH/Unifesp). His research focuses on Brazilian History, particularly the connections between history, literature, and the press. He is a specialist in the works and trajectory of the writer Lima Barreto (1881–1922).

He published the book A pátria que quisera ter era um mito: o Rio de Janeiro e a militância literária de Lima Barreto, which was awarded the Prêmio Carioca de Pesquisa. He also leads the Research Group Social History of Culture: Literature, Press, and Society.
