Researchers
Carlos Leone is graduated in Philosophy in 1996 and earned a PhD in the History of Ideas in 2004 (Universidade Nova de Lisboa). While still a student, he began collaborating as a literary critic in the press, first at Público, then at Expresso, LER, and shortly after, in the first Portuguese online cultural publications (Ciberkiosk, NON). Following this, he has contributed sporadically to various blogs and Portuguese media outlets, from DN and Diário Económico to RDP2 and CNN Portugal, almost always in a political context.
In addition to several works he has translated, he has been publishing books of his own since 1999. Initially focused on themes of contemporary Portuguese culture, a field in which he has published several books with INCM—where he also directed the cultural magazine Prelo (3rd series, 2005-2009)—he has, in the past decade, shifted towards more theoretical subjects, especially concerning the notions of Crisis, Risk, and Uncertainty. The most recent of these works is Normalidade (Theya, 2020; English version in 2022, slightly updated). His current focus on geopolitics does not exclude Portuguese themes, although these remain subordinated to the study of extra-EU trends.
He regularly participates in scientific conferences on both his current research interests and topics he has explored in the past. Professionally, after a predominantly academic period as a lecturer and researcher (2000-2010) at various universities in Portugal and abroad (UK: Oxford and Cambridge; USA: Brown and Rutgers-Newark), he transitioned into professional political analysis, first as an analyst for the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Lisbon (2011-2021) and now as an independent analyst. He regularly collaborates with both Portuguese and international institutions to promote the internationalization of the Portuguese economy and support multilateral cooperation efforts.
